Spanish has rapidly infiltrated the world’s population and according to linguistic experts, it’s not set to slow down anytime soon. As cited in a 2011 paper commissioned by the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of US Spanish speakers will continue to expand. Demographers Jennifer Ortman and Hyon B. Shin predict that by 2020 the nation will be home to up to 43 million speakers. The US isn’t the only country embracing Spanish, with worldwide non-profit organization the Cervantes Institute maintaining that demand is booming in the Asia-Pacific region. While in 2000 there were just 1,500 university students studying Spanish, 2014 saw this figure grow to a huge 25,000.
Vdovin explains, “Spanish is no longer primarily spoken in Spain. In fact, today Spain hosts just 10% of the world’s Spanish speaking population. As a result of immigration, population growth and study programs we’re now seeing the Spanish adopted as a primary language in households across the globe.”
